Sworn translation of death certificates: everything you need to know

Do you need a sworn translation of a death certificate from English into Italian, or a sworn translation of an Italian death certificate into English? Our firm — Traduttori & Avvocati Associati, based in Rome — handles the entire process: from professional translation, to sworn oath at the Tribunal of Rome, to legalisation or Apostille when required.

The death certificate is a critical document for cross-border inheritance, foreign pension claims, insurance payouts, civil registry updates and Italian citizenship by descent (iure sanguinis). In all these cases, a sworn translation is the essential first step.

When do you need a sworn translation of a death certificate?

Cross-border inheritanceThe translated death certificate is the document that opens the succession. Banks, notaries, land registries and tax authorities require it when the deceased had assets abroad or the heirs reside in another country.
Foreign pension claimsTo claim, suspend or transfer a foreign pension (Italian INPS, UK State Pension, US Social Security, German, French pensions), the pension authority requires an apostilled and sworn-translated death certificate.
Insurance payoutsForeign insurance companies require a sworn-translated death certificate to process life insurance claims, death benefits and insurance capital payments.
Italian citizenship by descent (iure sanguinis)For citizenship by descent applications, death certificates are required for every person in the genealogical line — from the Italian ancestor who emigrated to the applicant’s parents. Foreign-issued certificates must be apostilled and sworn-translated into Italian.
Civil registry updatesA death occurring abroad must be registered with the Italian civil registry. Conversely, an Italian death certificate must be translated for the authorities in the deceased’s country of nationality.
Closing bank accounts abroadTo close accounts, safe deposit boxes or transfer securities held by the deceased at foreign banks, a sworn-translated and legalised death certificate is required.

Apostille and legalisation

✓ Hague Convention countries (Apostille) For death certificates issued in Hague Convention countries (UK, USA, Canada, Australia, Ireland, etc.), the Apostille must be obtained from the competent authority in the issuing country — FCDO (UK), Secretary of State (US), DFAT (Australia). The apostilled certificate can then be sworn-translated into Italian.
⚠ Non-Hague countries (consular legalisation) For non-Hague countries, the certificate must be authenticated by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the issuing country, then by the Italian Embassy or Consulate. Only after legalisation can it be sworn-translated.
🇪🇺 EU exemption (Regulation EU 2016/1191) Death certificates are covered by EU Regulation 2016/1191. For use within the EU, a Multilingual Standard Form from the issuing authority may replace both the Apostille and the translation. Check with the receiving authority. Note: since Brexit, UK death certificates are no longer covered by this exemption.

Standard death certificate (1–2 pages): 24 hours. Full death record with annotations: 2–3 working days. Rush service available.
A relative died in Italy. I need the death certificate in English for the UK/US.
We translate Italian death certificates into English with a sworn translation. The Italian original is obtained from the municipality (Comune) where the death was registered. We then translate, swear the oath and, if needed, handle the Apostille via the Prefecture for use in Hague Convention countries. Since Brexit, UK authorities require the Apostille on Italian documents.
I need it for Italian citizenship by descent (iure sanguinis).
For citizenship by descent, you need death certificates for every person in the genealogical line (from the Italian ancestor to your parents). Foreign-issued certificates must be apostilled in the issuing country and sworn-translated into Italian. Italian-issued certificates going abroad need sworn translation + Apostille. We handle both directions.
Do I need an Apostille?
For EU countries: Regulation 2016/1191 allows a Multilingual Standard Form that may replace Apostille and translation. For non-EU Hague countries (UK post-Brexit, US, Canada, Australia): Apostille required. For non-Hague countries: consular legalisation. We handle the full process.
Can I order online?
Yes. 100% online. Delivery to your door in Italy or internationally.
