Marriage Certificate Translation: What You Need to Know

Do you need a sworn translation of your marriage certificate to present in Italy or at an Italian Consulate? Our Rome-based firm — Traduttori & Avvocati Associati — manages the entire process: from the precise technical translation of the document, to the official swearing-in at the Court (Asseverazione), and legalisation if required.

Unlike standard translation agencies, our team consists of court-certified translators and lawyers specializing in family and immigration law. This ensures that complex common-law terms from the US, UK, Australia, or Canada (such as specific property regimes, prenuptial agreements, or divorce endorsements) are translated with their exact legal equivalents in Italian.

We work seamlessly with certificates from all over the English-speaking world. The service is 100% online: simply send us a clear scan (PDF) of your document, and you will receive the legally binding sworn translation at your doorstep, anywhere in the world.

The Long-Form (Unabridged) Marriage Certificate is a crucial document for Italian citizenship applications (Jure Sanguinis and Jure Matrimonii). We guarantee our translations meet 100% of the Italian Ministry’s strict requirements.

When is a Sworn Marriage Translation Required?

An official sworn translation is mandatory whenever an English-language document needs to hold legal weight before Italian authorities. The most common scenarios include:

Italian Citizenship by Marriage (Jure Matrimonii)To apply for citizenship through your Italian spouse, the Ministry requires your marriage certificate translated and apostilled, proof of B1 Italian language proficiency, and meeting the legal timeframes (2-3 years of marriage/residency).
Citizenship by Descent (Jure Sanguinis)Following the 2025 reform (Decree-Law 36/2025), automatic recognition is now generally limited to children and grandchildren of Italians. You must provide the translated marriage certificates for the ancestors in your qualifying lineage.
Transcription of Marriage in ItalyIf you got married abroad (e.g., USA, UK) and reside in Italy, you must register the marriage at your local “Comune” using the translated certificate.
Family Reunification / VisasTo request a residency permit (Permesso di Soggiorno) for a foreign spouse, the Questura requires official proof of marriage.
International Divorce ProceedingsTo register a foreign divorce in Italy, or to initiate legal separation proceedings for a marriage celebrated overseas.
Real Estate & MortgagesItalian Notaries require the certificate to verify your marital property regime (e.g., joint or separate assets) when buying property or handling inheritance.

Short-Form vs. Long-Form: Which one do you need?

In the US, UK, Canada, and Australia, vital records offices issue different versions of marriage certificates. It is critical to obtain the correct format for Italy:

Short-Form / Abstract of Marriage A brief document that only states the names of the spouses, date, and city/location of marriage. It may work for basic visas, but it is almost never accepted for Italian citizenship or transcription.
Long-Form / Unabridged Certificate The complete copy of the marriage record. It includes parents’ names, the officiant’s details, and witnesses. This is the mandatory format for Italian citizenship and transcription.
Official Registry Copies (UK/AUS/US) Depending on your country, ask for the “Certified Copy of an Entry of Marriage” (UK/Australia) or the “Long-Form Certified Copy” (US). Do not confuse this with the “Marriage License,” which is just the pre-wedding application and generally not required by Italy.

Pro Tip: Only translate the final registered certificate! Make sure your document already has the Apostille attached before sending it to us for translation.

The Importance of the Apostille

A translation alone does not validate a foreign document. The correct sequence of procedures is essential to avoid your application being rejected by the Comune or Consulate.

✓ Documents from the US, UK, Australia to Italy These countries are members of the Hague Convention. You must obtain an Apostille on the original document (in the state/country of issue) BEFORE translation. We then perform the sworn translation in Italy, which is sworn directly in the Italian Court, making it ready for use in Italy without needing a second Apostille.
⚠ Documents from Italy to English-speaking countries If you married in Italy and need to register it in the US, UK, or Australia, the process is reversed: we first get the Italian certificate apostilled at the “Prefettura,” then translate it into English, and swear it in court.

How Our Sworn Translation Process Works

1

Send us your PDF

Scan your marriage certificate (making sure to include the Apostille page) in high resolution and send it via email or WhatsApp. You’ll receive a quote the same day.

2

Expert Translation

Our native-speaking legal translators translate the document into Italian, strictly following consular terminology and maintaining the original layout to help the Italian clerk read it easily.

3

Sworn in Court (Asseverazione)

We take the document to the Civil Court of Rome, where the translator takes an official oath before a Court Official (Cancelliere). The mandatory Italian government revenue stamps (“marche da bollo”) are applied.

4

Digital & Physical Delivery

We immediately email you a high-quality PDF scan of the completed sworn translation for your digital uploads. The physical original bound copy (with all stamps and signatures) is then shipped via courier to Italy, the US, UK, or anywhere else worldwide.

How much does the translation cost?

starting from €76 Short-Form Certificate (1 page)

The total cost depends on the length of your document. A US Long-Form certificate with an Apostille contains much more text than a simple standard certificate, requiring a custom quote.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Do I need to mail you the original document?
No. We work using a clear, high-resolution scan (PDF) of your original document. A printed copy of your PDF will be physically attached and bound to the translation and sworn in Court. Please ensure the document you email us already has the Apostille attached.
Is a Short-Form certificate okay for Italian citizenship?
No. The Italian government and local Comuni strictly require the Long-Form (Unabridged) certificate for all citizenship applications, as it contains the complete historical and vital details of the marriage (including parents’ names).
Are your translations accepted at all Italian Consulates?
Yes. Because our translations are sworn (asseverate) directly at a Civil Court in Italy, they hold full legal validity throughout the entire Italian territory, as well as at all Italian Consulates and Embassies worldwide.
Does the sworn translation done in Italy need its own Apostille?
If the translation is going to be used inside Italy (at a Comune, Questura, or Ministry) or at an Italian Consulate, it DOES NOT need another Apostille. The oath at the Italian Court is sufficient. If the translation will be used outside of Italy (e.g., submitted to a UK or US authority), we will need to Apostille the Italian Court official’s signature.
Can you get the Apostille on my US/UK document for me?
No. The Apostille on the original English document must be issued by the competent authority in the country/state where the document was issued (e.g., the Secretary of State in the US, or the FCDO in the UK). We handle the next step: translating it into Italian so it is legally valid in Italy.
